Mini Split Air Conditioner – Q&A
What is a mini split air conditioner?
Also called a "ductless air conditioner". a mini split system is a sort of hybrid between central air conditioning and a portable window unit. It consists of two separate units - the compressor outside the building and the air handler that is built into a wall inside the building. Some models will have more than air handler that is serviced by one compressor.
Can I install it myself?
Probably not. The system needs a professional HVAC contractor to wire the electricity, install drainage lines and additional lines for the coolant. You will probably also need your contractor to charge the system with the necessary amount of coolant.
Will there be a hole in the wall?
Yes, there will need to be a hole to accommodate the tubing that connects the compressor to the air handler, but the hole will only be about 3" in diameter, although the exact size depends on how far apart the indoor and outdoor units will be.
Can I cool the house in zones?
Yes. You can install a separate air handler in different rooms or areas of the house. Ideally, you would use a separate air handler for each room you want to cool. If you have a lot of open space that allows the air to circulate, you may be able to get away with using just one air handler. It's important to have your HVAC professional calculate the size of the system you will need, based on the number of BTU's necessary to cool the square footage and room layout.
